In late 2008, Sevnthsin approached JCPenney with the idea to convert their online store into a native application to run on the then brand new iPhone 3g. The problem was that JCPenney didn't have the APIs or a system we could tie into to power the app. Instead, we decided to shift the app's focus to weekly deals. Sevnthsin worked closely with JCPenney's print-production team to integrate into their workflow and build our own API for offering loyal users coupons and deals via the application. Users could see the products within the app, but ultimately had to buy them in-store.
While this wasn't ideal, it started a movement within JCPenney to migrate their entire online presence to a more data-rich modern system. JCPenney was quick to embrace the iPad. Before it even came out we were building paper and cardboard mockups. They've also expanded their app's offerings to Android, Blackberry, and eventually a mobile-web app. Since launch, there have been a few identity, and major layout overhauls. What's shown here is a collection of layouts throughout these quick few years.
